His story

Salih was sent to Thamud, who lived at al-Hijr, carving homes out of the mountains and building palaces on the plains (7:74). He called them to worship Allah alone (7:73) and warned them against corruption in the land.

They asked for a sign, and the she-camel of Allah was given to them as a clear sign. They were told to leave her to graze and not to harm her (7:73). They called Salih bewitched (26:153), then hamstrung the camel and defied their Lord's command (7:77). The punishment seized them, and they lay lifeless in their homes (7:78). Allah saved Salih and those who believed with him (11:66).

The stories that the camel came out of a rock have no sound basis, islamweb notes, and the Quran does not say in what way she was a sign.

And to Thamūd [We sent] their brother Ṣāliḥ. He said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him. He has produced you from the earth and settled you in it, so ask forgiveness of Him and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is near and responsive."

73. And to Thamûd (people, We sent) their brother Sâlih. He said: "O my people! Worship Allâh! You have no other Ilâh (God) but Him. (Lâ ilâha illallâh: none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh). Indeed there has come to you a clear sign (the miracle of the coming out of a huge she-camel from the midst of a rock) from your Lord. This she-camel of Allâh is a sign unto you; so you leave her to graze in Allâh’s earth, and touch her not with harm, lest a painful torment should seize you.
