The rulings

A quarter of a tenth

Zakat on money, gold, silver and trade goods is 2.5% of what you hold.

islamweb fatwa 422932; Abu Dawud 1573 ('Ali), graded sahih by al-Albani and Muhammad Muhyi ad-Din 'Abd al-Hamid, da'if by Zubair Ali Zai.

The nisab

Zakat is due only when what you hold reaches the nisab: 85 grams of pure gold, or 595 grams of pure silver. For money, islamweb's fatwa follows the lower of the two in value, which is usually silver, as better for the poor; the calculator does this unless you choose gold.

islamweb fatwa 422932, citing the Permanent Committee; al-Bukhari 1447: no zakat below five awaq of silver.

A full lunar year

It is due when the wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for a full lunar (Hijri) year. Wealth spent during the year is not counted; what remains at the year's end is.

islamweb fatwa 422932; Abu Dawud 1573.

Debts you owe

Scholars differ. The majority deduct debts due from your wealth before reckoning; ash-Shafi'i in his later view, Ibn Baz and Ibn 'Uthaymin do not. islamweb's fatwa calls not deducting the more cautious view. The calculator leaves debts out unless you tick the box.

islamweb fatwa 124533.

Jewelry worn for use

Scholars differ on gold jewelry worn for permissible use. islamweb's fatwas say there is no zakat on it, the view of the majority, while Abu Hanifa held it due; jewelry kept as savings or for trade is zakatable. Tick the box to include it.

islamweb fatwa 1325, on the scholars' views on jewelry.

What this does not cover

Livestock, crops, minerals, shares and businesses have rulings of their own, and are not calculated here.

Awaiting scholarly review, like the rest of the site. For a complex case (a business, shares, debts owed to you that may not be repaid), ask a scholar.
