The event

Quraysh came with about three thousand men to avenge Badr. Before the battle, 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy turned back with about a third of the Prophet's ﷺ army. He placed archers on a hill and told them not to leave it whatever happened.

The Muslims were winning when some archers came down for the spoils; the enemy came round behind them and the battle turned. The Prophet ﷺ was wounded, and seventy of the Companions were martyred. The Quran speaks of the day at length (3:121–179), beginning with the morning he set out to place the believers in their positions.
