Be in the world as a stranger

Live in this world like a traveller passing through, and make use of health and life before they go.

The hadith

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took me by the shoulder and said, “Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a wayfarer.” And Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say, “In the evening do not expect [to live until] the morning, and in the morning do not expect [to live until] the evening. Take [advantage of] your health before times of sickness, and [take advantage of] your life before your death.” [Al-Bukhari]

Lessons

Live in the world as a stranger or a traveller passing through: it is not a lasting home (3:185). A stranger does not settle down or cling to the place he is passing through. Whoever makes the Hereafter their main concern is given contentment of heart, and the world comes to them anyway. This is not a call to withdraw from people, but to choose company that does not harm one's faith.

In practice: use your health before illness and your life before death, and do not put off good deeds.

The sub-narrator added: Ibn `Umar used to say, "If you survive till the evening, do not expect to be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your health for your sickness, and (take) from your life for your death
