Life

She was the eldest of the Prophet's ﷺ daughters by Khadija. She married her maternal cousin Abu al-'As ibn ar-Rabi', and their children were 'Ali, who al-Dhahabi thinks died young, and Umama, whom the Prophet ﷺ would carry while he prayed.

She became Muslim and emigrated to Madinah years before her husband. After Badr, where he was taken captive, a report al-Dhahabi gives with a weak chain says she sent a necklace that had been Khadija's for his ransom. He accepted Islam and came to Madinah in 7 AH, and she was returned to him; the reports differ on whether this was under their first marriage or a new one.

She died early in 8 AH. The Prophet ﷺ told the women who washed her how to do it, and gave his own waist-wrapper for her shroud.

Umm 'Atiyya reported:When Zainab the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) died, he said to us: Wash her odd number of times, i. e. three or five times, and put camphor or something-like camphor at the fifth time, and after you have washed her inform me. So we informed him and he gave us his under-garment, saying:" Put it next her body
