Worship guidesThe prayer

The prayer, step by step

From the conditions before you begin to the closing salam: each act of the prayer, and what each school counts it.

Quran

The Prophet ﷺ told his Companions to pray as they had seen him pray, and corrected a man who prayed hastily until he did each part calmly. What follows is the prayer in that order. The steps of one rak'ah are repeated for each rak'ah of the prayer.

The schools agree on its form and on its core: standing, bowing, prostrating, the recitation and keeping the order. They differ on how they name the rest. The Hanafis and Hanbalis have pillars, wajib acts and Sunnahs; the Malikis obligations, Sunnahs and virtues; the Shafi'is pillars and Sunnahs. A pillar left out, even by forgetting, must be made up; a wajib left out by forgetting is made up by sujud as-sahw.

Before you begin

  1. Before you begin

The time of the prayer has begun.

  2. Before you begin

You are in a state of purity (wudu, or ghusl after major impurity), and your body, clothes and place of prayer are clean of impurity.

    All four schools: condition

Sources: 5:6; 74:4; Sahih al-Bukhari 135; The conditions of the prayer: of obligation and of validity (islamweb fatwa 1742)

  3. Before you begin

    The 'awra is covered.

  5. Before you begin

Intend in your heart the prayer you are about to pray.

    Hanafi: conditionMaliki: pillarShafi'i: pillarHanbali: condition

    Where the schools differ

A pillar for the Malikis and Shafi'is; a condition for the Hanafis and Hanbalis. Either way the prayer is not valid without it.

Opening the prayer

  1. Opening the prayer

Say 'Allahu akbar' to enter the prayer.

    Hanafi: conditionMaliki: pillarShafi'i: pillarHanbali: pillar

    Where the schools differ

A pillar for the majority; for the Hanafis a condition, like the intention.

  2. Opening the prayer

Raise your hands level with your shoulders as you say it.

    All four schools: sunnah

Sources: Sahih al-Bukhari 735; The Sunnahs of the prayer the jurists agree on (islamweb fatwa 311038)

  3. Opening the prayer

Stand for the obligatory prayer, if you are able; whoever cannot stand prays sitting, and whoever cannot sit prays lying on his side.

    All four schools: pillar

Sources: Sahih al-Bukhari 1117; The schools on the pillars of the prayer (islamweb fatwa 257347)

  4. Opening the prayer

    Recite al-Fatiha.

    Hanafi: wajibMaliki: pillarShafi'i: pillarHanbali: pillar

    Where the schools differ

For the majority al-Fatiha is a pillar in every rak'ah. For the Hanafis the pillar is recitation as such; al-Fatiha with a surah is wajib in the first two rak'ahs of an obligatory prayer, and in the last two al-Fatiha alone is recommended.

Sources: Sahih al-Bukhari 756; The schools on the pillars of the prayer (islamweb fatwa 257347); The Hanafi school on reciting al-Fatiha and more in the prayer (islamweb fatwa 62272)

    Say 'Amin' after it.

    All four schools: sunnah

  6. Opening the prayer

In the first two rak'ahs, recite some more of the Quran after al-Fatiha.

    Hanafi: wajibMost scholars: sunnah

    Where the schools differ

islamweb's fatwa on the agreed Sunnahs lists it among them; in the Hanafi school it is wajib in the first two rak'ahs, so forgetting it calls for sujud as-sahw.

  2. Each rak'ah

The sittings

  1. The sittings

After the second rak'ah of a prayer of three or four, sit and recite the tashahhud, then stand for the next rak'ah.

    Hanbali: wajibMost scholars: sunnah

    Where the schools differ

Most scholars hold it a Sunnah; the Hanbalis hold it wajib, so leaving it on purpose spoils the prayer, and leaving it by forgetting calls for sujud as-sahw.

Sources: Sahih al-Bukhari 1224; Leaving the first tashahhud, and the validity of the prayer (islamweb fatwa 174151)

  2. The sittings

After the last rak'ah, sit for the final tashahhud.

Sources: The schools on the pillars of the prayer (islamweb fatwa 257347); The pillars of the prayer for the Shafi'is and Hanafis (islamweb fatwa 67276)

  3. The sittings

Recite the tashahhud, as in the first sitting.

    Hanafi: wajibMaliki: sunnahShafi'i: pillarHanbali: pillar

    Where the schools differ

A pillar for the Shafi'is and Hanbalis. For the Hanafis the sitting is the pillar and the words are wajib; for the Malikis the sitting is required and the words are Sunnah.

  4. The sittings

Then send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, with the words he taught.

Closing the prayer

  1. Closing the prayer

Turn your head to the right, giving the salam, then to the left.

    Hanafi: wajibMaliki: pillarShafi'i: pillarHanbali: pillar

    Where the schools differ

A pillar for the majority, the first salam for the Shafi'is; for the Hanafis a wajib, not a pillar: leaving it on purpose does not void the prayer, but is a sin and the prayer is repeated.

Narrated Malik:We came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and stayed with him for twenty days and nights. We were all young and of about the same age. The Prophet (ﷺ) was very kind and merciful. When he realized our longing for our families, he asked about our homes and the people there and we told him. Then he asked us to go back to our families and stay with them and teach them (the religion) and to order them to do good things. He also mentioned some other things which I have (remembered or [??] ) forgotten. The Prophet (ﷺ) then added, "Pray as you have seen me praying and when it is the time for the prayer one of you should pronounce the Adhan and the oldest of you should lead the prayer

6. O you who believe! When you intend to offer As-Salât (the prayer), wash your faces and your hands (forearms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles[3]. If you are in a state of Janâba (i.e. after a sexual discharge), purify yourselves (bathe your whole body). But if you are ill or on a journey, or any of you comes after answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women (i.e. sexual intercourse), and you find no water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands.[4] Allâh does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you, and to complete His Favour to you that you may be thankful.

And Al-Ghurr-ul Muhajjalûn (the parts of the body of the Muslims washed in ablution will shine on the Day of Resurrection and the angels will call them by that name) from the traces of ablution. Narrated Nu‘aim Al-Mujmir: Once I went up the roof of the mosque along with Abu Hurairah He performed ablution and said, "I heard the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saying, ‘On the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be called Al-Ghurr-ul-Muhajjalûn from the traces of ablution and whoever can increase the area of his radiance* should do so (by performing ablution in the most perfect manner).’ " (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.1, Hadîth No.138). *The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم did not increase the area more than what is washed of the body parts while doing ablution as Allâh ordered to be washed in the Qur’ân. 31. O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes), while praying[3] and going round (the Tawâf of) the Ka‘bah, and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allâh) likes not Al-Musrifûn (those who waste by extravagance).

[3] (V.7:31) It is obligatory to wear the clothes while praying. And the Statement of Allâh عز وجل: "Take your adornment [(by wearing your clean clothes) covering completely the ‘Aurah (covering of one’s ‘Aurah means: while praying, a male must cover himself with clothes from the umbilicus of his abdomen up to his knees, and it is better that both his shoulders should be covered. And a female must cover all her body and feet except face, and it is better that both her hands are also covered)], while praying and going round (the Tawâf of) the Ka‘bah. In how many (what sort of) clothes a woman should pray? ‘Ikrimah said, "If she can cover all her body with one garment, it is sufficient." It is agreed by the majority of the religious scholars that a woman while praying should cover herself completely except her face, and it is better that she should cover her hands with gloves or cloth. but her feet must be covered either with a long dress or she must wear socks to cover her feet. This verdict is based on the Prophet’s statement (Abu Dâwûd). Narrated ‘Âishah رضي الله عنها: Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم used to offer the Fajr prayer and some believing women covered with their veiling sheets used to attend the Fajr prayer with him, and then they would return to their homes unrecognized. We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muḥammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face [i.e., yourself] toward al-Masjid al-Ḥarām.[53] And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces [i.e., yourselves] toward it [in prayer]. Indeed, those who have been given the Scripture [i.e., the Jews and the Christians] well know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allāh is not unaware of what they do.

144. Verily! We have seen the turning of your (Muhammad’s صلى الله عليه وسلم) face towards the heaven. Surely, We shall turn you to a Qiblah (prayer direction) that shall please you, so turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid-al-Harâm (at Makkah). And wheresoever you people are, turn your faces (in prayer) in that direction. Certainly, the people who were given the Scripture (i.e. Jews and the Christians) know well that, that (your turning towards the direction of the Ka‘bah at Makkah in prayers) is the truth from their Lord. And Allâh is not unaware of what they do.

In the name of Allāh,[2] the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.[3]

Translator's notes

[2] Allāh is a proper name belonging only to the one Almighty God, Creator and Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is within them, the Eternal and Absolute, to whom alone all worship is due. [3] Ar-Raḥmān and ar-Raḥeem are two names of Allāh derived from the word "raḥmah" (mercy) . In Arabic grammar both are intensive forms of "merciful" (i.e., extremely merciful) . A complimentary and comprehensive meaning is intended by using both together. Raḥmān is used only to describe Allāh, while raḥeem might be used to describe a person as well. The Prophet (ﷺ) was described in the Qur’ān as raḥeem. Raḥmān is above the human level (i.e., intensely merciful) . Since one usually understands intensity to be something of short duration, Allāh describes Himself also as raḥeem (i.e., continually merciful) . Raḥmān also carries a wider meaning - merciful to all creation. Justice is a part of this mercy. Raḥeem includes the concept of speciality - especially and specifically merciful to the believers. Forgiveness is a part of this mercy. In addition, Raḥmān is adjectival, referring to an attribute of Allāh and is part of His essence. Raḥeem is verbal, indicating what He does: i.e., bestowing and implementing mercy.

[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord[4] of the worlds -

Translator's notes

[4] When referring to Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) , the Arabic term "rabb" (translated as "Lord") includes all of the following meanings: "owner, master, ruler, controller, sustainer, provider, guardian and caretaker."

Another translation: Al-Hilali & Muhsin Khan · QuranEnc v1.1.2

2. All the praises and thanks be to Allâh, the Lord[1] of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).[2]

[1] (V.1:2) Lord: The actual word used in the Qur’ân is Rabb There is no proper equivalent for Rabb in English language. It means the One and the Only Lord for all the universe, its Creator, Owner, Organizer, Provider, Master, Planner, Sustainer, Cherisher, and Giver of security. Rabb is also one of the Names of Allâh. We have used the word "Lord" as the nearest to Rabb . All occurrences of "Lord" in the interpretation of the meanings of the Noble Qur’ân actually mean Rabb and should be understood as such. [2] (V.1:2). Narrated Abu Sa‘îd bin Al-Mu‘alla: While I was praying in the mosque, Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم called me but I did not respond to him. Later I said, "O Allâh’s Messenger, I was praying." He said, "Didn’t Allâh say - Answer Allâh (by obeying Him) and His Messenger when he صلى الله عليه وسلم calls you." (V.8:24). He then said to me, "I will teach you a Sûrah which is the greatest Sû rah in the Qur’ân, before you leave the mosque." Then he got hold of my hand, and when he intended to leave (the mosque), I said to him, "Didn’t you say to me, "I will teach you a Sûrah which is the greatest Sûrah in the Qur’an?" He said, " Al-Hamdu lillahi Rabbil-‘âlamîn [i.e. all the praises and thanks be to Allâh, the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists)], Sûrat Al-Fâtihah which is As-Sab‘ Al-Mathâni (i.e. the seven repeatedly recited Verses) and the Grand Qur’ân which has been given to me." (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.1, Hadîth No. 723). Hudhaifa reported:I prayed with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) one night and he started reciting al-Baqara. I thought that he would bow at the end of one hundred verses, but he proceeded on; I then thought that he would perhaps recite the whole (surah) in a rak'ah, but he proceeded and I thought he would perhaps bow on completing (this surah). He then started al-Nisa', and recited it; he then started Al-i-'Imran and recited leisurely. And when he recited the verses which referred to the Glory of Allah, he glorified (by saying Subhan Allah-Glory to my Lord the Great), and when he recited the verses which tell (how the Lord) is to be begged, he (the Holy Prophet) would then beg (from Him), and when he recited the verses dealing with protection from the Lord, he sought (His) protection and would then bow and say: Glory be to my Mighty Lord; his bowing lasted about the same length of time as his standing (and then on returning to the standing posture after ruku') he would say: Allah listened to him who praised Him, and he would then stand about the same length of time as he had spent in bowing. He would then prostrate himself and say: Glory be to my Lord most High, and his prostration lasted nearly the same length of time as his standing. Narrated `Abdullah bin Buhaina:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) once led us in a prayer and offered two rak`at and got up (for the third rak`a) without sitting (after the second rak`a).
