The event

Hawazin and Thaqif gathered under Malik ibn 'Awf. About twelve thousand Muslims marched out, ten thousand from Madinah and two thousand from Makkah, the largest army they had had. Malik hid his men in the narrow passes of the valley of Hunayn, and when the Muslims came down at dawn they were met with arrows and broke.

The Prophet ﷺ stood his ground with a few of the Muhajirun and the Ansar; al-'Abbas called out to the people of the pledge, and they came back. The Quran recalls how their numbers pleased them and availed them nothing, how the earth grew narrow for them, and how Allah then sent down His tranquillity and won the day (9:25-26). Malik later came to the Prophet ﷺ as a Muslim. When the spoils went largely to new Muslims of Makkah, the Ansar were hurt, until the Prophet ﷺ reminded them that others would take sheep and camels home while they would take him.

QuranAt-Tawba (The Repentance)Quran 9:25

Allāh has already given you victory in many regions and [even] on the day of Ḥunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it did not avail you at all, and the earth was confining for you with [i.e., in spite of] its vastness; then you turned back, fleeing.

25. Truly Allâh has given you victory on many battle fields, and on the Day of Hunain (battle) when you rejoiced at your great number, but it availed you naught and the earth, vast as it is, was straitened for you, then you turned back in flight.

Narrated Abu 'Is-haq:Somebody asked Al-Bar-a bin `Azib, "Did you flee deserting Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) during the battle of Hunain?" Al-Bara replied, "But Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did not flee. The people of the Tribe of Hawazin were good archers. When we met them, we attacked them, and they fled. When the Muslims started collecting the war booty, the pagans faced us with arrows, but Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did not flee. No doubt, I saw him on his white mule and Abu Sufyan was holding its reins and the Prophet (ﷺ) was saying, 'I am the Prophet (ﷺ) in truth: I am the son of `Abdul Muttalib
