About this place

The Quran names as-Safa and al-Marwah among the rites of Allah, and tells whoever makes Hajj or 'Umrah that there is no blame in going between them (2:158).

Shurrab describes both as rocky hills: as-Safa at the southern end of the way between them, where the walk begins, and al-Marwah at the northern end, where the seventh round ends. As-Safa was once joined to the mountain of Abu Qubays, until they were separated when the Haram was enlarged.

QuranAl-Baqara (The Cow)Quran 2:158

Indeed, aṣ-Ṣafā and al-Marwah are among the symbols[55] of Allāh. So whoever makes ḥajj [pilgrimage] to the House or performs ʿumrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them.[56] And whoever volunteers good - then indeed, Allāh is Appreciative[57] and Knowing.

Translator's notes

[55] Places designated for the rites of ḥajj and ʿumrah. [56] Some believers had previously feared that this might be a pagan practice, so Allāh confirms that saʿī is among the rites of His religion. [57] i.e., He rewards generously.

158. Verily! As-Safâ and Al-Marwah (two mountains in Makkah) are of the Symbols of Allâh. So it is not a sin on him who performs Hajj or ‘Umrah (pilgrimage) of the House (the Ka‘bah at Makkah) to perform the going (Tawâf) between them (As-Safâ and Al-Marwah).[32] And whoever does good voluntarily, then verily, Allâh is All-Recogniser, All-Knower.
