Parables of the QuranA parable of the Quran · Al-Baqara 2:171

The one who calls to cattle

مثل الذي ينعق بالبهائم

Those who reject the call to faith hear only sound, like cattle hearing their herdsman.

Quran

What it means

When the disbelievers are called to faith, their likeness is that of animals hearing their herdsman: they catch the voice but not the meaning, deaf, dumb and blind to it (2:171).

As-Sa'di explains that they hear enough for the proof to stand against them, but not with an understanding that benefits them: they do not hear the truth to accept it, look at it to learn from it, or speak what would do them good. Rejecting good counsel and choosing ruin, he says, is the height of folly, however clever one may be in worldly things.

QuranAl-Baqara (The Cow)Quran 2:171

The example of those who disbelieve is like that of one who shouts at what hears nothing but calls and cries [i.e., cattle or sheep] - deaf, dumb and blind, so they do not understand.

171. And the example of those who disbelieve is as that of him who shouts to those (flock of sheep) that hears nothing but calls and cries. (They are) deaf, dumb and blind. So they do not understand. (Tafsîr Al-Qurtubi )
