Parables of the QuranA parable of the Quran · Al-Hashr 59:16–17

Like Satan when he says, disbelieve

مثل الشيطان إذ قال للإنسان اكفر

Satan urges a person to disbelieve, then disowns him when he does; both end in the Fire.

Quran

What it means

Those who misled others with false promises are like Satan when he tells a person to disbelieve, and when he has disbelieved says he is clear of him and fears Allah, Lord of the worlds; the end of both is the Fire (59:16-17).

As-Sa'di explains that this is Satan's way with all who follow him: he makes disbelief attractive and calls to it, and when they fall into the trap he abandons them, able to defend them against nothing. All the blame lies on the one who obeyed him, for Allah warned against him.

QuranAl-Hashr (The Exile)Quran 59:16

[The hypocrites are] like the example of Satan when he says to man, "Disbelieve." But when he disbelieves, he says, "Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I fear Allāh, Lord of the worlds."

16. (Their allies deceived them) like Shaitân (Satan), when he says to man: "Disbelieve in Allâh." But when (man) disbelieves in Allâh, Shaitân (Satan) says: "I am free of you, I fear Allâh, the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists)!"
