An-Nawawi's Forty HadithHadith 8

The sanctity of a Muslim

Whoever enters Islam has their life and property protected, and their reckoning is with Allah.

Sahih

The hadith

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar (ra): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "I have been ordered to fight against the people until they testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and until they establish the salah and pay the zakat. And if they do that then they will have gained protection from me for their lives and property, unless [they commit acts that are punishable] in Islam, and their reckoning will be with Allah." [Bukhari & Muslim]

al-Bukhari, Muslim

Lessons

The article explains that the mission of the prophets was that the religion be for Allah (2:193), and that this is no license for compulsion, since there is no compulsion in religion (2:256). Whoever testifies to faith, prays and pays zakah has their life and property protected, except where the law itself allows otherwise. People are judged by what they show; their hearts are left to Allah.

In practice: accept people's outward profession of faith and do not probe their hearts.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), and offer the prayers perfectly and give the obligatory charity, so if they perform that, then they save their lives and property from me except for Islamic laws and then their reckoning (accounts) will be done by Allah
