An-Nawawi's Forty HadithHadith 5

Rejecting innovations in the religion

The religion is complete: a new act of worship added to it is not accepted.

Sahih

The hadith

On the authority of the mother of the faithful, Aisha (ra), who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “He who innovates something in this matter of ours (i.e., Islam) that is not of it will have it rejected (by Allah).” [Bukhari & Muslim] In another version in Muslim it reads: “He who does an act which we have not commanded, will have it rejected (by Allah).”

Lessons

The religion is complete (5:3), so no one may add a new act of worship to it. A deed is accepted only when it is sincere and follows the Sunnah (18:110), and there is one straight path (6:153). The hadith concerns the religion itself, not worldly inventions such as crafts, books or better roads.

In practice: learn your religion and keep within what it teaches, and do not rush to call a practice an innovation before checking that it truly has no evidence; it may be a forgotten Sunnah.
