A few mouthfuls are enough to keep one upright; if more is needed, the stomach is shared between food, drink and breath.

The hadith

Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib said:"I heard the Messenger of Allah (S.a.w) saying: 'The human does not fill any container that is worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat what will support his back. If this is not possible, then a third for food, a third for drink, and third for his breath

Lessons

Ibn Rajab calls this hadith a foundation of medicine: a physician he cites said people would avoid most illnesses if they followed it. Eating little is the ideal; the division into thirds is for one who must eat more.

He gathers the scholars' words on its benefit to the heart: eating little softens the heart, sharpens understanding and weakens desire and anger, while fullness dulls the heart and makes worship heavy. In practice: stop eating before you are full, and leave room for drink and breath.
