An-Nawawi's Forty HadithHadith 27

Righteousness is good character

Righteousness is good character, and sin is what unsettles the heart and you would hate others to see.

Sahih

The hadith

On the authority of an-Nawas bin Sam’an (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Righteousness is in good character, and wrongdoing is that which wavers in your soul, and which you dislike people finding out about. [Muslim] And on the authority of Wabisah bin Ma’bad (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “You have come to ask about righteousness.” I said, “Yes.” He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Consult your heart. Righteousness is that about which the soul feels at ease and the heart feels tranquil. And wrongdoing is that which wavers in the soul and causes uneasiness in the breast, even though people have repeatedly given their legal opinion [in its favour].” A good hadeeth transmitted from the musnads of the two imams, Ahmed bin Hambal and Al- Darimi, with a good chain of authorities

Lessons

Righteousness is good character: generosity, not harming others, forgiving and kindness (2:177). Sin is what unsettles the heart and what you would dislike people to see. Where the heart is uneasy, it is weighed with knowledge: clear evidence comes first, unease without evidence is a call to caution, and baseless whispers are ignored. The second narration, from Ahmad and ad-Darimi, an-Nawawi graded hasan.

In practice: treat people well, ask qualified scholars, and do not follow obsessive doubts.
