The AngelsNamed in the Quran

Raqib and 'Atid

رَقِيب وَعَتِيد

  • A group of angels

Every word a person utters is recorded by a watcher, ever present. Scholars discuss whether raqib and 'atid are names or descriptions.

Role and accounts

Two receivers take down a person's deeds, one seated on the right and one on the left (50:17). He speaks no word without a watcher beside him, always present (50:18). They are the noble scribes, who know what people do (82:10-12), and the one on the right records good deeds, the one on the left bad deeds.

islamweb's fatwa explains that "raqib" and "'atid" describe the two angels as watchful and present, never leaving the person. They are not their names; no angel is named Raqib or 'Atid.

If somebody intends to do a good deed and he does not do it, then Allâh will write for him a full good deed (in his account with Him); and if he intends to do a good deed and actually does it, then Allâh will write for him (in his account) with Him (its reward equal) from ten to seven hundred times, to many more times; and if somebody intends to do a bad deed and he does not do it, then Allâh will write a full good deed (in his account) with Him, and if he intends to do it (a bad deed) and actually does it, then Allâh will write one bad deed (in his account)."
